Mangatainoka River Bridge Before
The Mangatainoka River Underpinning project involved the strengthening of a 73m long, six span, two lane bridge to preserve the integrity of the state highway, following degradation of the river bed and local scour, accentuated by debris build up around the piers. Underpinning works were performed on the three piers located in the river and scour protection works were performed on the two piers located in the flood plain.
BBO were engaged to perform this project under its existing contract with Transit for the management of 600 bridges on state highways throughout the Taranaki, Wanganui and Manawatu regions. BBO were responsible for design and project documentation, contract procurement and construction surveillance. More specifically, BBO undertook consultation with the Department of Conservation, Fish and Game, service authorities and other stakeholders, obtained resource consent for the project, developed the concept design, detailed design and construction surveillance of modification works, and designed scour projection measures.
BBO's competencies are evident throughout many aspects of this project. BBO undertook fast tracked design and tendering between December 2001 and February 2002 to ensure work could be completed and allocated funds expended before the end of the financial year. The design was developed to minimise works within the waterway, therefore minimising exposure of the Contractor's workforce to flood risk and reducing impact on the environment. BBO demonstrated its ability to get the best use out of an existing bridge asset and keep a safe state highway operating during online construction.
The project demonstrates BBO's ability to provide appropriate physical solutions to problems encountered during bridge inspections.
